An Immersion in Mother Culture

REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST!

OUR NEXT EVENT IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WILL TAKE PLACE SEPTEMBER 6-8, 2019 AT THE PALISADES RETREAT CENTER IN FEDERAL WAY, WA! SAVE THE DATE!

We invite you to join us for a weekend of learning, delight and Mother Culture at the Warm Beach Camp and Conference Center on September 7-9, 2018.

Come. Be immersed.

This will be an opportunity to begin the “school year” by living out the philosophy and lifestyle that we try to create in our homes, inspired by the works and philosophy of Charlotte Mason. We will learn about what Mother Culture is, reflect on how to make it a part of our daily lives and be immersed in opportunities for Mother Culture at the retreat.

There will be ample opportunities to learn about and experience Mother Culture: time for nature walks, handicrafts, nature journaling, birding, canoeing and a Saturday night camp fire (complete with s’mores!). Mass and a prayer service will be available on Sunday morning.

You will leave this retreat invigorated and rejuvenated, ready to dive into another year of homeschooling.

Contributors

While immersing ourselves into Mother Culture, we will also hear from experts in varying fields.

Some of our retreat contributors will be:

Betsy Farquhar, managing editor and staff writer of Redeemed Reader, will share with us about living books, commonplace books and reading journals.

Ed Dominguez, a lead naturalist at the Seward Park Audubon Center, will give a presentation on birding and will lead us on a birding nature walk.

NEW! – Kathy Wickward, blogger at Northwest by North and presenter at the CMI West Conference in July, will be leading us in a Shakespeare immersion.

NEW! – Jason Dorsey, owner and art director of Sunnyshore Studio on Camano Island, was “born with paintbrushes in his hands. His dad and mom encouraged him as an artist from the earliest age.” He will be sharing about the culture of art in his own family, which includes five generations of artists! He will provide examples of his own work, and then be available to answer questions and give tips as we work with our own watercolors, drawing and nature journals.

Jackie Siochi will lead us in a reading, group narration and discussion about what Mother Culture is. She will also be providing wisdom about how to avoid burnout.

Cate Florey, a local jewelry artist, will lead us in a handicraft.

NEW! – Hannah Vander Wilt, who graced us with her musical talent at the 2017 conference, will be leading us in music again throughout the weekend.

We have more exciting things in the works for this retreat!

We will keep the web page updated as more details become finalized.

Location, Lodging & Meals

We will be staying at Warm Beach Conference Center in Stanwood, Washington, just 50 miles north of Seattle. Warm Beach Conference Center is located on the coast of Port Susan in the beautiful Puget Sound. Situated in a beautiful natural setting, the Conference Center is set apart from the distractions of modern life.

Three hundred acres of scenic beauty include a panoramic view of Puget Sound and both the Olympic and Cascade Mountain Ranges. Acres of cedar and evergreen forest with miles of meandering trails invite you to explore the beauty of God’s creation.

We will be sharing bedrooms in the Mt. Baker Cabins, which have queen beds and bunk-style beds, and Olympic View Lodge, which have queen beds and single day beds.

Each attendee will have their own bed unless their spouse is also an attendee.

Some rooms have their own bathroom, and others will share a bathroom with another room.

All linens will be provided.

Meals
The retreat will include six meals, beginning with dinner on Friday night and ending with lunch on Sunday.  These meals, along with coffee and tea, will be provided with the retreat.

Warm Beach can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, dairy free and/or gluten free diets. If your diet is more restrictive, a refrigerator and microwave are available from 7:00 am to midnight.

Date & Rates

Our two night retreat begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 7th  and continues until the conclusion of lunch at 12:45 pm on Sunday, September 9th.

We have three room choices for this retreat:

Dorm-Style Cabins – $261 per person for a shared room, sleeping 3-5 in dorm style rooms. These rooms include queen beds and bunk-style beds. Each attendee will have their own bed, which could be a queen bed, or the top or bottom of a bunk.

Double Occupancy Rooms – $295 per person for a shared room, sleeping 2. These rooms include a queen bed and a single day bed.

Single Occupancy – $375 per person for a single occupancy room. We have a small number of single occupancy rooms available, which are intended for mothers traveling with babies or for attendees bringing their spouse.

Spouses & Teens
You are most welcome to have your spouse or teen join us for the retreat. When you register your spouse or teen to attend the retreat with you, their $60 registration fee will be waived.

If your spouse is joining you for the retreat, you will need to register for a single occupancy room or double occupancy room, either of which will have a queen bed. You can then also register your spouse and their $60 registration fee will be waived.

If your teen daughter is joining you for the retreat, you can register for any of the room choices, and we will have your teen placed in a room with you. You can then also register your teen and their $60 registration fee will be waived.

If you would like to bring your teen son, we can try to accommodate you in one of our single occupancy rooms or make other agreeable arrangements. Please email Rebecca if you would like to bring your teen son.

We have limited rooms available to accommodate spouses. Married couples will be placed by themselves in a single occupancy room or double occupancy room. Teens will be placed in a room with their parent in a separate bed.

If your teen or spouse is attending the retreat with you, you will need to go through the registration process for each attendee.

Infants
You are also welcome to bring an infant with you to this retreat. We encourage moms with babies to either share a room with a friend or to book a single occupancy room. We have a small number of single occupancy rooms available for moms bringing babies or for attendees bringing their spouse.

Please be prepared to take a crying baby out of our meeting space so as not to distract the other attendees.

Mothers traveling with babies should bring whatever they need for their baby’s sleeping arrangements.
